Frequently Asked Questions

What are we?

Building Blocks in a 501(c)(3) Non-profit organization promoting community and economic development in underserved communities, by helping people start or improve their own businesses.

How can we help?

Unfortunately, a great service or product doesn’t always translate in to a successful business. Small Businesses fail at an alarming rate, mostly due to mismanagement, a lack of financing opportunities, poor planning, poor marketing, and the list goes on. Building Blocks assumes the role of educator, developer, promoter, and mentor, in helping your business ideas take off by focusing on the nuts & bolts of operating a business. Why are we?

Small businesses are the lifeblood of America. They serve as pillars of the community by fostering economic activity, civic engagement, and fiscal opportunity. There are far too many areas throughout our great country that are void of these qualities. However, this is not an indictment on the level of talent and ability possessed by the people in these communities. Building Blocks serves to enrich communities by teaching, encouraging, and inspiring local citizens to generate or improve upon their great ideas by bridging the gap between a good product and sound business practices.

Who do we serve?

Building Blocks serves any individuals exemplifying a need for our services. However, we prioritize the needs of those representing underserved communities and populations. Building Blocks also works with all types of corporate designations, from sole proprietors and corporations to non-profits. As a matter of principle, we do not offer services to publicly traded companies, or companies falling outside the small business size standards classification, as defined by the US Small Business Administration.

What are we not?

We are not a consultation firm. Building Blocks does not offer services for profit, nor do we promote business practices solely for establishing the solvency of a business. We are not a bank or financier, as we strictly prohibit the use of organization donations towards funding or financing activities of any person, company, or corporate entity. We are not financial investors. We are not running your business for you. Our job is not to create a great idea for you, it’s to help you transform your great idea in to a viable business.

How much do we charge?

Our advisory and education services are FREE. As a non-profit organization, we strive to offer the communities and the people we serve with a viable, credentialed resource they can tap in to as needed. Therefore, it’s only appropriate we offer services free of charge. However, we also understand that business owners may be way too busy with the day to day rigors of creating their products, or delivering their goods and services to their customers, or working their primary job to spend time on the nuances of developing a business or marketing plan, or conducting a feasibility analyses, or conducting extensive industry research, etc. This is where Building Blocks come in. For a nominal fee, we will develop the appropriate content on your behalf. Our prices vary per project, but are generally a fraction or what for-profit firms charge. We simply want to see people succeed at their entrepreneurial endeavors.

Where are we located?

We currently have office in Miami, Florida, and Washington, D.C. While we pride ourselves on being a grassroots organization devoted to improving the communities in which we are based, we also serve communities outside of these metropolitan areas.
